All children want to learn and therefore every child is already a Scientist.
We have been in awe of our children since birth...seeing how they observe the world around them, explore objects and materials, test hypothesis', and gain perspective from varying their actions on their "test subjects". For me, teaching children science is not about learning facts or memorization. It's about inviting children to use their senses in order to wonder about possibilities.
This puts the learning in the child's hands.
And every child is learning something different.
I watch these young scientists carefully... What do they need in order to explore possibilities? What problems can I pose...
What makes each experience interesting?
The parent or caregiver's journey in Wonder Science class is equally as important and interesting to me as a teacher. How do Parents and caregivers interpret their child's actions?
How does the adult's disposition for learning affect the child's?
What words and/or actions are most effective for children to go deeper and more intentional in their Scientific research?
Wonder Science is based on a Co-Constructivist model of learning. Meaning, the children are constructing knowledge together with their peers and Adults.
The idea is that we are all learning together.
If we are all learning...then even the adults need to adopt the child's way of Scientific thinking:
observe the world around you, explore objects and materials, test hypothesis', and gain perspective from varying your actions on your "test subjects".
Remember...you were once and can be Again...A scientist.
